Case 1 - ISTE Standards
The ISTE Standards are a set of standards for the use of technology in teaching and learning, with different standards for both the student and the teacher. The 21st century is a digital age. Technology is constantly being developed and the ability to better educate using these new technologies has never been greater. There are many ways in which new technology can be utilized to enhance the learning experience. The student standard, "Innovated Designer" stresses this concept.
The innovated designer is defined as "students who use a variety of technologies within a design process to identify and solve problems by creating new, useful or imaginative solutions." This can be related to the 21st Century Skills, a skill set of abilities that are needed in order to succeed in 21st-century society and the workplace. Two of these skills are relevant to the standard in question, those being critical thinking and creativity. These are important skills for this standard because they are necessary to meet it. Critical thinking is a skill that allows one to understand a concept on a deeper level. Creativity, in this instance, can allow a person to come to a new, imaginative solution.
The teacher must also display different skillsets in order to facilitate positive growth in their students. In order to achieve this, a teacher must be willing to be a learner themselves. It is important for a teacher to be improving their skills along with those of their students. Additionally, in this digital age, a teacher must be digitally literate. If they are to incorporate technology into their lessons as a means of improving education, they must be aware of what they're doing. The technology cannot be merely a superfluous "add-on". It has to facilitate further learning. This allows the student to have a better understanding of the technology they use and gives them the ability to explore that which they have. A teacher must also be a designer. In terms of the ISTE standards, a designer is someone who designs authentic, learner-driven activities and environments that recognize and accommodate learner variability. This allows the students to put that which they have learned into practice and better develop their skills with not only the material but also technology in the classroom.
I had a teacher like this in high school. The person in question was Mr. Lewis, my history teacher. He encouraged the use of different computer-based programs to collects, organize, and present information. In terms of our actual in-class presentations or project, he gave us the ability to take many creative liberties, which ultimately allowed for more diverse and abstract results. I feel as though this allowed to prosper and put more effort into our work because we weren't just trying to meet the minimum, we were encouraged and given the tools to go beyond.
